How it all started:
I attended my first Anime Convention in April of 2003, the first ever Anime Boston. I have been a general anime fan for many years before this—cutting my teeth on Sailor Moon and Ronin Warriors during high school, but I feel that my first convention was my first true step to Otakudom.
Right away I knew that I had found something special. A place where I felt comfortable, where I belonged, where I was with ‘my people’ and I knew I had to be a part of the Otaku World.
The idea of opening a store slowly evolved over the next few years, with ideas ranging from the outrageous to the wacky. But I knew I wanted to create something unique for the fandom. A place where I could capture that special convention ‘feeling’ no matter what time of year it was.
Naming my baby took some effort. I knew what I wanted to do, but what to call it? Thinking of the interest in the Japanese culture that usually comes hand in hand with loving anime, I came up with the catch phrase: “For the Popular Culture of Japanese Anime” and from that PopCult Anime emerged. Along with an idea for a logo, which the lovely PhePhe was able to create for me later, along with some of the first art work I used for my buttons.
Now with a name, and the idea, I still needed a place to start. So, after attending yet another convention, this time a Sci-Fi one, I had a brainstorm! I would sell buttons. So, investing in a few button machines and a laser printer I set out for my first Artist Alley table at Llamacon. Just a simple one day con to get my feet wet in February of 2006. I had a blast and met tons of great people, and sold lots of buttons ( I also learned it might not be a good idea to wear cosplay all day when selling buttons).
On a roll, I attended more and more local New England conventions, gathering a crew of locals that have helped me so much over the past year. You can check out their bios through their picture links above.
Currently, I have located a talented artist, Sin, who has agreed to be the official PopCult Anime artist and she has created some wonderful fanart and original art for the PCA button line. Her art also inspired me to research a new line of products, which I hope to launch later this year. Please be on the look out for it!
And once again it’s the start of a New Year and the PCA is gearing up for another con season, but first, the launching of the PopCult Anime website. So, please take a moment to check out the button catalogs and drop by the forum and say hi.
